Deep in the mountains, this town is full of great mountain views, outdoor adventures, and local spots that make it feel like a hidden treasure.

As you drive through Colorado, Gunnison is a great place to stretch your legs and explore. You can walk along quiet trails, enjoy the lakes and rivers, or grab a bite at one of the cafes in town. Plus, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the main attraction in the area, and definitely worth the stop! Best Time to Visit Gunnsion

Gunnison is one of those places that shines in every season, but when you go really depends on what kind of adventure you’re looking for. We visited during the springtime, and it was such a great choice! In spring, the wildflowers begin to bloom across the valleys, making it the perfect time for peaceful hikes, fewer crowds, and anything outdoors. 

If you love warm weather and want to explore lakes, go camping, or try mountain biking, summer is a great time to visit. The days are sunny and long, making it easy to pack in lots of outdoor fun. 

Fall is also beautiful in Gunnison, with colorful leaves covering the mountainsides — perfect for scenic drives and crisp air adventures. 

And of course, if you’re into winter sports like skiing or snowmobiling, winter brings a snowy wonderland to the area.

Downtown Gunnison: Wander the main street for shops, cafes, and friendly faces. It’s a great spot to grab coffee or a bite to eat after a day of exploring. Be sure to grab a coffee and bagel at Mocha’s; this is one of our favs! 

Gunnison Pioneer Museum: Step back in time with vintage trains, wagons, and frontier history that tell the story of Gunnison’s wild west roots.

Iola Boat Ramp Ghost Town (Submerged Townsite): When water levels are low at Blue Mesa Reservoir, you might spot the remains of the old town of Iola — once a lively railroad stop, now mostly underwater.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park: A must-visit! Known for its cliffs and views, this park feels like nature showing off. Hike the rim, or take the adventurous route into the canyon itself.

Curecanti National Recreation Area: Spend the day by the water at Colorado’s largest reservoir. Enjoy boating, fishing, and scenic drives with beautiful lake and mountain views.

Hartman Rocks Recreation Area: Locals love this playground of rocky trails. It’s great for mountain biking, hiking, and rock climbing — especially at sunset when the rocks glow orange and pink.

The Mill-Castle Trail: A hidden hiking gem! This trail leads you deep into the beauty of the West Elk Mountains, with views of castle-like rock formations.

Waunita Hot Springs: Tucked away from the crowds, this family-run hot spring is a great place to soak and relax after a day of adventure.

How do you get to Gunnison?

Gunnison has its own small airport — Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport — with seasonal flights. Most visitors, though, drive in. It’s a great road trip stop along U.S. Highway 50, especially if you’re traveling between Colorado and California like we did!
