Hostel Policies

  • SELF CHECK-IN: 4-10 PM (No shared dorm check-ins after 10 PM)
    - We are a small operation with limited reception hours. Someone from our team is on-site daily to oversee the hostel and is on-call for overnight emergencies. All guests must self-check in between 4-10 PM by providing us with a copy of each adult's US driver's license or foreign passport. Self-check-in instructions and door codes will be sent around noon on your arrival date. Please check your spam folder. Guests can access our building and your assigned room via a unique PIN code once we verify their photo ID.

    Quiet hours begin at 10 PM, and we cannot accommodate shared dorm check-ins after this time. Please plan accordingly. There is no curfew for guests staying on our property once you are checked in, though we remind everyone that we have strict quiet hours in both common space and guest rooms.

    CHECK-OUT (BY 11AM)
    Check-out is before 11 AM. Please strip sheets and pillowcases from all used beds and put them in the laundry bins in the reception area. If you want to extend your stay, let us know before checkout. Late checkout is available for $10/hr. Please sign the departure sheet on the reception desk to let our staff know you have cleared your room.

  • Must be 18 or older (unless traveling with a parent or legal guardian, AND booking a private room)

    Bring a valid government-issued ID + Debit/Credit Card in your name. 

    We do not accept 3rd party payment. The credit card or debit card used for payment must belong to at least one of the guests staying overnight in our facility. Please be prepared to show your card and ID at check-in.

    PRE-PAYMENT IS REQUIRED
    At the time of booking, your debit/credit card is charged for the full reservation amount. Space is not held without a paid reservation. Cash is accepted for walk-in reservations, but a credit card must be presented and held on file with a $200 authorization in the event of any incidentals.  WE DO NOT ACCEPT 3RD PARTY PAYMENTS. The name on the card used for payment must belong to at least one of the guests staying overnight in our facility. Please book only if you have confirmed your travel plans as a portion of your booking is always nonrefundable.

  • The standard* booking cancellation notification requirement is a minimum of 48 hours prior to 8 am of the check-in date for a 75% refund. 25% of the total is always nonrefundable. All cancellation requests must be submitted IN WRITING BY EMAILING info@montereyhostel.com. We do not process reservations over the phone. No refunds are offered within 48 hours. We recommend waiting to book until you have confirmed your travel plans, as no booking is fully refundable. Please consider taking out a 3rd party traveler insurance policy as cancellations due to unforeseen changes in your travel plans such as weather conditions, canceled flights, COVID-19, or illness do NOT waive any cancellation fees.*Special Event bookings may be subject to a more strict cancellation policy. Please review the special event details below.

    *Special Event Policy Applies to the following dates: Big Sur Marathon (Apr 25-27), Cali Roots (May 23-26), July 4th Weekend, Car Week (Aug 8-17), & Jazz Festival (Sept 26-28)

No refunds are offered within 7 days. We recommend waiting to book until you have confirmed your travel plans, as no booking is fully refundable. Please consider taking out a 3rd party traveler insurance policy as cancellations due to unforeseen changes in your travel plans such as weather conditions, canceled flights, COVID-19, or illness do NOT waive any cancellation fees. Holiday rates may apply.

  • RULES FOR GUEST STAY

    1. Be Decent. Guest(s) must respect and be courteous to other guests. Individuals who disrupt the peace and create tension with other guests or staff will be removed from the property without a refund. Any guest subject to a complaint from two or more unrelated parties will be removed from the property without a refund. This harmonious community policy is essential for an enjoyable experience for every guest.

    2. We take the safety of our guests and their belongings seriously. We reserve the right to refuse service to individuals who pose the risk of harm to themselves and/or others. If you see anything alarming, please alert our staff immediately. Guests are encouraged to secure valuables in lockers or reserve private accommodations. The hostel assumes no responsibility for items or vehicles stored on our property. CCTV is in use in indoor and outdoor public areas only. Tampering with equipment is strictly prohibited.

    3. No unregistered visitors on the property. Our property is for paid overnight guest use only. For all guests’ safety, we do not permit visitors to come to the hostel with you. Shared accommodations are solely for the occupants assigned to that room. Parties and soliciting are strictly prohibited.

    4. No smoking or vaping is allowed indoors or within 25 feet of our building. Smoking on the deck, near windows, or exits is strictly prohibited. Evidence of smoking (of any kind) indoors will result in a minimum $250 cleaning charge.

    5. Pets of any kind are not allowed on the property, including emotional support animals.

    6. Quiet hours are from 10 PM-8 AM in all rooms and communal spaces. Community areas and the kitchen close at 10 PM. We want you to enjoy yourself, but please respect other guests' and neighbors’ experiences. Violators may be removed and charged for the disruption to others.

    7. Alcohol Policy: Beer and wine are allowed in community areas for guests 21 or older. Liquor is not permitted. No alcohol shall be stored or consumed in guest rooms. The hostel prohibits possessing, using, or distributing substances and alcohol on our property. Guest(s) agree to decent and orderly behavior at all times. Any appearance of intoxication is grounds for removal from the hostel without a refund.

    Be Clean. Monterey Hostel is a self-catering hostel. All guests must clean and pick up after themselves. Self-cleaning includes, but is not limited to, wiping down the shower and bathroom area after use; washing dishes, silverware, and cookware before and after cooking; and properly disposing of trash, recycling, and compost. Guests in shared accommodations must keep their items organized, clean, and out of walkways so all beds and doors are accessible. If you damage our property, we will hold you financially responsible.

  • Guests who stay Sunday-Wednesday get free parking!

    For guests booking Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, parking is available in the hostel parking lot for $10/night per vehicle. Please register your vehicle at our front desk to receive a parking pass. Free street parking is available throughout our neighborhood from 6pm-8am. Public street parking is metered or time-limited during the day, so be mindful of posted signs.
