Dorm Etiquette 101

Guests hang out in the pod bunks at ember hostel.

Yay! You’re planning your trip the USA, and it’s time to book your hostel. Maybe it’s your first time staying in a dorm, or you need a refresh. We’ve put together a little guide on what to do (and not do) to make friends, and have a great time living the hostel life.

Since it’s almost certain everyone's schedule will vary when sharing a dorm, the golden rule is to be kind and treat others the way you want to be treated. Luckily, most bunkmates are gracious and respectful. Be like them! Follow these easy ways to behave yourself and make friends when staying in a dorm.

Pack the night before.

Promise your roommates that before you head out for your last night, you’ll have your bags packed for your early departure the next day. Your newest friends will thank you for the quiet morning. No hurried zipping of bags or crinkling of papers when it’s still dark out.

Use headphones for all audio needs!

Think like you’re flying on an airplane: nobody wants to hear what you’re listening to. Make friends, not grumpy-woke-up-on-wrong-side of the bed aquaintances.

Keep the plastic bags out of the dorm.

Tell us why they crinkle as loud as an earthquake trembles. Again, we want to think about your new friend’s sleep. Nylon packing cubes are a dream for keeping your things organized and quiet.

Keep it G-Rated

If you decide to take it to second base, take it somewhere less communal. Period. No intimate moments in the dorms. Ever.

Maintain an orderly space

Don’t let your new friends catch your dirty socks on the floor. Challenge yourself to keep your dirty clothes tucked away, your shoes in a locker and your trash in the bins.

Golden rule? Don’t be a jerk!

Pro Tip: Stay at a hostel with 24-hour reception and you can be sure a Hostel staff member is on-site to help and wants you to let them know if you encounter any unwanted behavior.
